Project Probe - Transmission Tunnel Fabrication

The Probe had a very small tunnel down the middle of the floor pan to run the exhaust pipe. This tunnel was not big enough to fit the bellhousing, transmission and driveshaft. The plasma cutter was very handy for removing the floor necessary to build a tunnel. The new tunnel was built in pieces. First I fabricated a cover for the bellhousing. This piece was about 8 inches deep and was welded to the firewall and floor pan. The firewall was very flimsy since I had cut it for the bellhousing. Welding in the first section of the tunnel strenghtened the firewall very much. Next a piece of sheet metal tunnel was fabricated to cover the driveshaft. Finally the transmission was covered with two removeable pieces of sheet metal. A small flange was welded to the floor pan to attach the removeable tunnel.
