Project Probe - Locating the Engine

Preliminary measurements indicated that a 302 would fit in the engine compartment of a probe. The firewall does need to be cut for the bellhousing tunnel, but the location of the firewall does not need to be moved. The first thing I did was to cut the rack and pinion mounting bracket off of the firewall. Next, I took a number of measurements to find the center of the car. I then dropped a dummy engine into the compartment to get a visual idea of where everything would be. Next, I fabricated a 37 inch wide front motor plate out of aluminum. The engine plate was bolted onto the dummy engine and the dummy engine was once again hung in the engine compartment. I then welded up two 1 inch box tubing stilts to hold the engine steady. The stilts were bolted to the motor mount pads. This allowed me to tilt the engine and keep it steady for taking measurements and determining where to weld the front motor plate mounting tabs. The engine is tilted back about 4 degrees relative to the rocker panel. The engine had to be offset one inch to the passenger side to allow enough room for the gas, brake and clutch pedals to clear the transmission tunnel.
